Fashion Replay at the 2015 Academy Awards: The Good, The Bad, and The Basic

Everyone knows I love watching award shows, and the red carpet arrivals leading up to the shows. Unfortunately, I had some more pressing issues to attend to when the Oscars red carpet and ceremony aired last night, but fortunately, my fabulous friend Toya stepped in and provided me with a summary of all the fashion! If you missed it as well, check out her take on last night’s  most memorable fashion moments below:

” I stayed up late to watch the most fashionable night in Hollywood, and I was not disappointed. Here’s my take on the good, the bad and the basic at the 2015 Academy Awards.

The Good

Reese Witherspoon: You can always bet on black and white, and ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Reese won. This dress fits her petite frame perfectly and the black accent bands accentuate her beautiful neckline and tiny waistline. She paired the look with simple jewelry, soft curls, and her best accessory – her smile.

Rita Ora: Slay Rita! Slay. She gave us strapless, corset, a train and gold-leaf embroidery at the same time, and she completely killed this look. The nude lip, smoky eye and slick hair really showed us that Rita will not be boxed. She’s serving so much face in this picture. I die and I live.

Rosamund Pike: Everybody ain’t able to pull off a red gown and Ms. Pike took the chance and nailed it. This dress looks like it was made with her in mind. The mesh fabric on her waistline tells us that Rosamud has been shooting layups in the gym. At first I wanted her to have more jewelry, and then I remembered that a perfectly arched eyebrow will take you places that an arm cuff will not, and her brows are indeed on fleek. Kudos to Ms. Pike who often finds herself on the worst dressed list.

Emma Stone: Emma Stone came to the Oscars looking like she knew she was a winner. She may not have taken home a trophy, but she definitely landed on the best dressed list. She beams from head to toe in this chartreuse beaded gown, and her side swept auburn curls complete the look. On Hollywood’s biggest night she set the bar pretty high. Werk Emma girl!

The Guys

Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbath and Edward Redmayne : I’m convinced that men across the pond take “Personal Styling 101” in grade school because all of my best dressed gentlemen come from England.

Idris Elba: Suits were meant for this man. When does he not look good in a suit? I’ll wait. And did you see his red bottoms? Somebody catch me.

Cumberbath and Redmayne duked it out in the “Best Actor” category and both came to win. Cumberbath served James Bond swagger in his white dinner jacket and Redmayne reminded us that a good tailor will take you far. I guess that’s why he won best actor.

The Bad

Marion Cotillard: I know that white is trending on the red carpet, but it’s important that one’s dress photographs well from all angles. I’m am not feeling the fit from this angle. Sorry Marion. Maybe next time.

Solange Knowles: I will ride to the moon and back with Solo, but today, I got off the ride. The cape top and pants number was so… wrong and not appropriate for the Oscar’s. Do better Solo girl. We were rooting for you.

Lady Gaga: Who wakes up in the morning and says “ I think I want to wear rubber red dishwashing gloves with my gown tonight at the Oscars?” Lady Gaga does. I don’t know why I ever have hopes for her wardrobe selections when she consistently lets me down. I’m glad she can SANG though and her fiancee is fine so she ain’t losing afterall!

David Oyelowo: David took a risk and rocked a red Dolce & Gabbana shawl lapel tuxedo with a jeweled brooch on the red carpet. I am not a fan of wearing this risk past New Year’s Eve. I usually enjoy his red carpet looks, but I’ll pass on this one. What would Martin do?

The Basic

Gwyneth Paltrow: “I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.” The pale pink. The rose shoulder accent. The barely there eyebrows. Girl stop it.

Gail King: Gail always looks like the mother of the bride. When Oprah is your best friend you shouldn’t get trapped in that box. I don’t like the rouched pleating in the front and I wish the dress was longer. Break free Gail! Break FREE!!

unnamed                                                                                                  Gail King in Versace.

Kevin Hart: This suit is giving me Express Men’s fashion circa 2004 and that’s not a compliment. Holla at Idris’ stylist Kevin. It’s time boo.

unnamed                                                                                          Kevin Hart in Lanvin.

Thanks for letting me chime in Kasi! ”

Thank you for the detailed, and entertaining wrap-up Toya! 🙂 I’m here for it, and I’m with you on all of the above! Let me just add that I caught a few pictures of Chrissy Teigen, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, and Zoe Saldana and thought they slayed as well!

Does everyone else agree with Toya’s picks? Leave a comment below and let us know!

Toya, I love your choices. Great guest posting! I must say that I was shocked to see Gayle until I read the caption…you are dead on with the description of the dress. I LOL’d at Kevin Hart in the Express men’s suit.

  2. Renea

Toya hit the nail in the coffin. I died laughing at the mens express comment because it was so true. And I think it’s time for Gale to use some of her allowance that Oprah gives her and hire a stylist. No shade just truth.

  3. Shanica

Like, everyone else, I laughed so hard at your comment about Kevin’s express menswear circa 2004 suit HA! I was disappointed in Solange’s choice too. I love her eccletic, never fit in a box fashion sense but I agree that I didn’t think this choice was appropriate for the oscars.

  4. Kimi

I usually enjoy Kevin’s fashion choices, but I was pretty underwhelmed this time around. Reese killed it though – I really loved the color and cut of the dress on her. Your rundown was so on point!

  5. Courtneythe

Love love love the top picks for the men! These dudes looked great, but I also gotta shout out Common “Lonnie Lynn” LOL! He looked greaaaaat! Much shade to Kevin Hart, it was a fail and you definitely called it. Too bad for Gail, because Oprah looked fab! Great choices Toya!

  6. MJN

Interesting take. A little sad Lupita’s dress didn’t make the good list. I wasn’t mad at Solo’s ensemble either. Idris looked amazing in his suit. Benedict’s dinner jacket was also bomb. Didn’t watch the Oscars, but certainly happy to read this post!

  7. Mia Jones

Emma Stone slayed this entire awards season. I loved the sheer and flowing from the knee down black number and the tuxedo’ish black pants that were tailored to perfection on top of perfection.

I liked David’s look. It was different and it was tailored to an inch of life as well. I also liked Lupita, Zendaya and Rita.

    Great Review.

  8. Teneasha

There is indeed something special happening with overseas tailoring. I was heartbroken over Solange’s choice, you were so right and it needed to be said. Fantastic review and I’m looking forward to hearing more from you.

  9. Nadeen

I think this is the first year in years I didn’t watch the Red Carpet and only saw last hour of the show! Great picks! I loved JLo’s dress too. Funny about that red suit on David and Kevin looks even shorter in that pic. Lol. Marion I agree too loose fitting. I love Reese!
